Marriage is often filled with hopeful beginnings and promises of forever. However, when the honeymoon feelings fade out, a lot of not-so-ideal things come to surface. There are feelings of hurt, resentment, anger, and mistrust that can ruin your marriage.
Problems are unavoidable in any stage of a relationship. A union with two different individuals coming from different backgrounds are sure to raise conflict–but that is the whole point of marriage–bringing together different people with one ultimate goal: to establish love, faithfulness and a lifetime of commitment.

If you are serious about solving the problems that can ruin your marriage, I encourage you to watch this video.
The video talks about how to save your marriage even if you’re the only one who seems to be acting on it.
Now, let’s move on to seeing which things can ruin your marriage and how to avoid them.
5 Things That Can Ruin Your Marriage (And How To Avoid Them)
1. Always rehashing past mistakes
The past is in the past for a good, good reason. But the number one mistake that brings marriages down is the constant reminder of it during arguments. Are you familiar with statements like,
“Remeber the time when you did… (insert past mistake here)”
“Oh yeah, how about when you… (insert past incident here)”
Rehashing past mistakes are like fuel to a small flame. They bring up unnecessary pain and conflict in your relationship that might ruin your marriage. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:17:
2. Refusing to forgive
The unwillingness to forgive is something that breaks relationships apart. Always remember that you and your partner are two imperfect individuals.
At some point, you are also sure to make mistakes, so you will also be needing to ask forgiveness from time to time. Refusing to forgive creates a distance between you or your loved one which can ruin your marriage.
Just remember, as Jesus forgave you, you must also learn to forgive. When you don’t feel like forgiving, think about this question: What is more important holding on to? Your hurts or the person you love? It’s that simple.
Forgiveness is not about the other person, it is mostly about you.
3. Poor communication habits
Communication is the pillar of any relationship. Whether you’re married, engaged, or a long-term couple, all couples must always communicate in order to make their relationship grow.
What can ruin your marriage is the poor communication habits that you refuse to give up. These include:
- passive aggressive actions and words – “Go ahead, I don’t care what you’re gonna do!”
- accusations – “you ALWAYS do this to me!”
- cold shoulder – “I don’t wanna talk to you today!”
These poor habits need to be eliminated in order to improve your relationship.
4. Selfishness
When the two of you promised to commit forever, there is less of “I” and “you”, but more of “we” and “us”. You are already in the same team. It doesn’t matter who’s wrong or who’s right, what matters is you do what is right. And that is to continue your commitment.
Selfishness is one of the strongest poisons that can ruin your marriage. In fact, it is the driving force that makes people commit acts that drive them apart from their loved ones.
5. Lack of trust
Another important topic to deal with when it comes to things that can ruin your marriage is the lack of trust. Lack of trust happens when past issues of infidelity happens, or when you cannot find yourself trusting your partner to prioritize your relationship in his or her life.
In any relationship, there should be a leap of faith. If you are always filled with doubts about your loved one, you cannot move forward in your relationship. All the more that your partner will be discouraged and refuse to commit if you cannot invest trust.
