nothing is going right in life

Have you ever felt like there’s a picture perfect idea of how you want things to be, only to arrive at a situation where you feel like nothing is going right in life? I have.

Does it feel like nothing is going right in life?

I have a Type A personality. I like things planned and in order. It doesn’t have to be outrageously neat or perfect, all I want are my daily tasks to be checked to make me feel accomplished.

This personality spanned through my pregnancy and delivery. My pregnancy was planned, and I always dreamed of that moment where I would finally deliver with my husband by my side while we held hands and a baby on our arms.

So you can expect the disappointment I felt when none of these happened and even seemingly worse things occurred after the birth of my son.

However, my birth story was a lesson about life that changed me for the better. Whenever I feel like nothing is going right in life, it’s God’s beautiful reminder of how He can turn unexpected things to build my character. I hope that this little snippet of my life will encourage you to keep on going even if you feel like nothing is going right in life.

My husband didn’t make it to my delivery.

For reasons which are none of our fault, my husband didn’t get to see the exact moment when our child was born.

He was in military orders and was planning to go back the day after my water suddenly broke. However, even if he rushed to go home with a plane ticket on hand, we knew he wouldn’t make it still.

This is a pang in my heart at that time—my dream of being together while I give birth to our first child is gone. I had no time to process this emotion because I had to decide for the safety of our baby. I had no choice but to push through my birth.

What God taught me: We live in an imperfect world. There will be unmet expectations, crushed dreams, and last-minute decisions because nothing went according to plan. He didn’t promise for those things not to happen, but He promises that He will be with you through it.

Despite the abundant availability of both self-help books and Bible study materials, many of us find it difficult to apply what we learn, to make that long head-to-heart journey of change.

When we are faced with life’s daily trials, our responses often lack the Christian maturity we desire–showing us clearly just how far we have to go. Is it possible to achieve a deeper, more permanent change of heart?

Instead of being sad about my birth experience, God revealed to me what I had during those times. I had my in laws by my side when I gave birth. I had technology to keep in touch with my family back in the Philippines and my husband. I had a good hospital and staff members who helped my experience to be as comfortable as possible.

There are mothers in this world who had to give birth in dire conditions, and despite that, they beam with joy upon welcoming their child. God revealed to me that it isn’t about the circumstances that surround my birth experience that made me victorious, but it’s about how I perceive it.

Will I choose to grieve about it endlessly, or will I look back and thank God that everything went well, despite not being what I thought it would be?

I had to undergo surgery after birth.

Just when I thought my ordeal was over, it was just getting started! The doctor noted that the tears I had upon birth wouldn’t stop bleeding so I had to undergo blood transfusions. I also had to be sent to the OR to close up the tears I had and to ensure that I wasn’t continuously bleeding.

In the following weeks, we had to go to the emergency at least three times to check if my continuous bleeding was still normal. I had to go back to surgery again at least once to close up the wound for good. I had a long and winding recovery which made me question if I wanted more kids (now looking back, I would still say it was worth it!). Haha!

What God taught me: The journey can be long but it will all turn out for the good. My favorite verse, Romans 8:28, took on a new meaning at that point in my life.

The verse says:

“For all things work for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”

I now stand firm in the truth that God brought me through that challenging time so I could lean to Him, that I could trust Him more. In those moments, I recognized my weakness and I witnessed His strength. Slowly but surely, I recovered.

Those experiences humbled me and helped me see how much mothers sacrifice for their children. I learned so many lessons about selflessness, humility, and learning to prioritize the precious time that I have.

Now, my baby is healthy, and by God’s grace I am well. I am sharing this part of my life as a testament of God’s goodness and how He can turn seemingly negative experiences into ones that create Christlike character in us.

Perhaps you are a new mom who is hoping for a natural birth but became sad about a C section, or sad about a birth experience in general. Maybe you have landed a job but it wasn’t what you hoped it would be. Or it could be that you’re at a certain age and your life at present wasn’t what you expected when you were younger.

We all have disappointments, but remember that as you keep putting your hope in God, those heartbreaks will turn into heart breakthroughs.

It doesn’t always mean a breakthrough in your situation, but maybe a breakthrough in your character, or your relationship with God.

Keep trusting God, and allow Him to use your situation to mold you into Christlikeness.
