I’ve read about plagues and worldwide spread of a certain disease, but I never expected that I would experience it firsthand. Knowing that we have excellent health technologies circulating around the world but still, a virus managed to cleverly spread and infect thousands of people.

We are forced to stop our usual daily routines and stay at home just to protect our families, ourselves, and the people we interact with. We see health workers voluntarily sacrificing the comforts of their homes to answer their call of duty which is to serve those who are infected with the virus. We see volunteers in trying to maintain unity and order to prevent further chaos. We see governments trying their best to find solutions and assist their nation.

We only see these scenarios in movies. Who would have thought that we would experience it in real life?

Times like this can be scary.

Everything is so uncertain. And because of these uncertainty, we tend to create possible situations that might happen to us and to our loved ones.

Where will I get the means to buy and pay for basic necessities when there is work suspension?

What if the supply of food will run out?

What if I get infected with the virus?

What if a loved one gets infected and dies?

What are the permanent changes that comes with this pandemic?

I don’t blame those people who are scared of coronavirus. Actually, I understand why people fear this virus.

Reasons why people are scared of coronavirus

First, it shows significant symptoms to those people who are immune-compromised.This means that only people with a weak immune system gets to show symptoms that would lead to a diagnosis and testing. However, there are a lot of cases where people with a healthy immune system and does not show symptoms tested positive with the virus. This goes to show that a person may not necessarily show symptoms but is a possible carrier of the virus, making the transmission faster.

Second, Covid 19 symptoms are severe and can be fatal. It has been observed that a person infected with the virus shows a wide variety of symptoms such as cough, sore throat, stomach pains, and shortness of breath. And the severity of symptoms depends on the state of the person. Based on the common cases worldwide, there are higher death rates on people who are in ages 40 years and up. Also, if the person infected has already underlying illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and other immunocompromised illnesses, they have also high risk of showing severe to fatal symptoms.

Lastly, Covid-19 is a novel virus. This means that it is new to humans. We don’t have enough experience in handling it, there are no developed vaccines to protect ourselves against it, and there is very limited knowledge about it. Scientists and health experts are still on the process and are doing their best to provide enough knowledge and develop possible protection against it.

It is because of these facts, coupled with the uncertainty of our situation, are exactly the reason why we are scared of coronavirus.

And when anxiety and fear starts to creep in, we will tend to see and focus only on the object of our fear – the virus, our current status, and our future.

Fear cripples us.

When fear begins to take over our minds and our hearts, it hinders us from things. It takes our eyes off the blessings that is around us. It prevents us from being bold and brave in doing things that can benefit others. It makes us selfish, telling us to protect ourselves all the more.

The situation is scary and we have every reason to be scared of coronavirus, however fear is not the solution. Holding on and being controlled by our fears will never help us in this situation.

I am a front liner in this war against Covid-19. I specifically assist on laboratory testing for the virus. What we do is we receive patient samples from different hospitals and would conduct pre-processing procedures for laboratory testing. And every time the samples arrive, I can’t help but feel anxious of the possible harmful scenario that comes with handling it.

“What if it was not properly sealed? What if there are leaks to the sample and unknowingly it has contaminated the patient files? What if the sample we are handling is positive with the virus and a spill happened?”

However, my fear is always silenced when I remember God’s promise in the Bible.

“So, do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

I am always reminded of this verse that no matter how scary the situation I am in, God is with me. He is there to protect me and help me in doing my job as a front liner.

Are you scared? Are you looking for coronavirus tips that can help you fight the crippling fear that you have? Or do you know someone who needs encouragement and ways on how to fight their fears? Here are my ways on how to fight the fear and stop myself from being scared of coronavirus.

Scared of coronavirus? How to fight your fears

Choose to see the situation in God’s lenses

One thing that helped me fight the fears during this time is choosing to look at the situation like how God wants me to look at it.

When fear starts to creep in, I always counter it with the question, “God, I’m scared. But, what do you want me to see in this time?”

Whenever I ask this question, I stop myself from focusing on the fear that I feel and look for things that I can do to actually help the situation. If you start to feel the fear, counter it by focusing on what you can do in that very moment. When you watch the news, and see that the cases are still rising, remind your friends and loved ones to stay at home to help flatten the curve. When you need to go outside to buy groceries and your scared that you might get infected, wear your mask and be cautious in touching surfaces. When you’re a front liner and you’re scared that you might get exposed, follow your protocols and focus on following diligently the process in handling patients and samples.

Don’t let the fear cripple you. Instead, fight it by praying and asking God on how He wants you to see the situationand act. Choose to always help yourself and others. Again, don’t let the fear stop you from doing what needs to be done.

Follow the coronavirus tips of healthcare experts

Another thing that helped me fight the fear of the virus is by following the coronavirus tips shared by the health experts.

It has been discovered that we can actually fight off the virus and protect ourselves from it by following these tips:

  • Frequent hand washing:  The virus can survive in different surfaces for a couple of hours and it can be transmitted to us and others when we touch these surfaces. That is why it is important to frequently wash our hands to get rid of the virus that is present. The virus is weak against soap and is killed by it, as well. It is also advisable that when you go outside, you need to take a bath once you arrive at home, to wash off the virus.
  • Social distancing: The virus can easily be transmitted between humans. So, it is encouraged that people should distance themselves from one another to avoid possible transmission of the virus. We should avoid crowded places and should have ample space from the person beside you. This is the reason why quarantines are encouraged and implemented so as to limit interaction of people for a certain period. In doing this, we get to deprive the virus of possible host entry and starve it.
  • Avoid touching face: As mention earlier, there’s a chance where the virus can come in contact with our hands. So, as much as possible, we should avoid touching our face as to prevent it from entering our system. The virus is a respiratory virus, so it tends to stay in our respiratory tract. That is why we should avoid touching our face to stop it from possible contact of the nose and mouth.
  • Boost immune system: One effective way to fight the virus is boosting our immune system. To prevent ourselves from acquiring the virus and showing Covid 19 symptoms, we should keep a healthy lifestyle, drink vitamins and nutrients, and get enough sleep.

Following these tips can give you protect you from transmitting the virus, thus giving you peace and can help you from being scared of it.

Spend more time in the presence of God

Lastly, the most effective way for me to stop the fear that I feel during this time is by spending more time with God.

Since I have scheduled duty in our laboratory, I have a lot of spare time during this quarantine. I utilized this to set aside a couple of hours for me to spend time with God, that is to read His word and spend time in prayer.

By doing this, I get to read God’s assurance and promises despite the uncertainty of the situation. I also get to focus on praying for my nation, the front liners, and asking for God’s mercy to stop the spread of the virus. Aside from this, I get to know who God is in my life and how He loves me and cares for me.

Philippians 4:6-7 said that “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

So, if you are tired of getting scared and would want to find ways to fight your fear, do this by choosing to draw near to God and spend time with Him. Open your bible, find devotional apps in your phone that can help you read a scripture daily. Go to your room and pray. Talk to God about your worries and fear and let Him silence those by His peace, promises, and comfort.

This is the best time for you to come to Him and spend time in His presence.

I know, fear is hard to fight but it can be defeated. Don’t let it cripple you. Don’t let it consume you. Stand up, take action, and fight it by relying on God’s strength and peace.
