How to keep house secure when on holiday: My personal story

Both my mother and mother-in-law are great when it comes to reminding me to secure the house before leaving. I have learned from their habits as I observed that they check (and double-check) to lock doors, close windows, and turn on certain lights to dissuade some burglars from trying to get in.

In the numerous times that we went on vacation, I was able to learn how to keep home secure from anyone who might try to break in from their examples. Thankfully I don’t have any incidents where someone was successful to steal anything from within our home.

However, there were a few incidents where some of my Amazon delivered packages were opened. Thankfully, most items weren’t stolen, and only one incident where my husband didn’t receive his expensive motion camera from the deliveries. Apart from that, we were relatively unscathed. Here are some tips we live by on how to keep your house secure from burglars.

How to keep house secure when on holiday: Tips to remember

Use a security camera and put in a sign

A great way to dissuade burglars from entering your home is by indicating that you have an indoor and outdoor security camera. When we installed a Ring Camera in front of our door, the incidents of people opening our Amazon packages eventually decreased until they stopped doing it. Since we can track motion from outside the home, the outdoor camera works to stave off potential burglars. It also helps put a sign that you have a CCTV in your home to turn them off from trying to break in.

As for an indoor camera, it is best to place indoor systems such as Victure Wireless on common walkways. This can include the living room as well as hallways leading to bedrooms. Make sure to place the camera in well-lit areas and use an SD card to record movements when you are about to go on a vacation.

Security cameras not only discourage burglars, but they also serve as physical evidence even if someone tries to break in your home.

Don’t forget your multiple locks

Some people leave by habit only to close one lock. Sadly, this can make the job easier for burglars especially if they were to choose between target homes to break in.

Thus, give yourself a physical reminder to close all multiple locks if you have one. For example, locking the glass door and wooden door in your front entrance will help in avoiding any potential break-ins.

The current home we are living in has doors in the sun room as well as leading to the kitchen. Before leaving, one of the ways on how to keep home secure is that I make sure that the sun room doors are locked as well as the door from the kitchen.

Leave certain lights on

Lights indicate that there’s a person currently inside the house. People who have the intention to steal look for homes that have generally most lights off even from miles away.

To avoid being a target, turn on some lights in your home that could be easily seen from afar. If you are leaving for a day or two, what’s a little bit of electricity spent to keep your home secure?

This is especially useful if you have an open garage. Burglars will assume that you’re not in if you don’t have a car in the garage, but they will think twice if you have some lights on visible from the outside. Just make sure that the light you’re leaving is safe and free from any hazards.

Secure rooms with high-ticket items

Aside from locking your doors in main entrances, you can also secure rooms by placing high-ticket items in a safe or locking the closet door. You can also disguise expensive items using books, bags, and other unsuspecting items so even if someone tries to break in, they won’t be able to take anything of value.
