We desire them to be capable and able to express their thoughts as they mature and become independent beings in the world. How to make my child speak clearly

As someone who has a background in speech and language pathology, it is quite natural for me to talk to my child in ways that can improve the way he speaks. You see, talking has three main parts–the content of what you’re saying, how you say it, and the purpose of what you’re saying.

In this post, I will be focusing on “articulation”, or in simpler terms, how to make your child speak clearly. I will be showing some simple ways to improve speech clarity for toddlers and young children.

Emphasize certain speech sounds

This simple trick can be one of the ways on how to make child speak clearly, because in certain situations, the problem is a lack of awareness. When children are unaware that they are saying certain sounds in an unclear manner, that is where the problem starts.

To emphasize, you can increase either the volume of the speech sound, or the length. If you child has problems saying “s”, such as saying “toup” instead of “soup”, you can model it by emphasizing the “s” sound, such as “ssssoup”. This will allow more room for increased awareness.

Use speech articulation workbooks

Speech articulation workbooks are also a great way to practice improving your child’s clarity in speaking.

In my workbook “Articulation Games for Speech Therapy”, I focus on several common speech problems that persist beyond the age of 7. Having workbooks increases the frequency of your child speaking or encountering a certain speech sound, which helps them practice and master their skills even more.

Point to your mouth

It may seem commonsensical, but it is really effective! Just by pointing to your mouth and saying a practice or target world slowly, you are giving your child a chance to observe how your mouth, jaw, tongue, and teeth are positioned to create the certain word.

Some children just need more time to observe how certain words are spoken in order for them to demonstrate the skill on their own. Pointing to your mouth gives extra emphasis as well.

Tap each syllable

Is your child having the specific problem of missing out on syllables? You can tap each syllable for words that are multisyllabic. For example, saying “caterpillar” may be much easier if you give a cue of tapping your lap per each syllable said: /ca/ /ter/ /pil/ /lar/. This helps you child also become more aware that each syllable should be said in correspondence to the tapping.

You can also create a game where you hop on a mat or point to circles per syllable said. The point is to give a one-to-one correspondence of rhythm on the number of syllables of the target word.
