Tucking your kids to bed is a wonderful routine that will make them feel secure and loved. I bet you have come across this post already because you are intentionally reading to your child. I no longer have to explain the wonderful benefits of reading, but rather showcase now some best bedtime fables you can read to your little ones.
This post is brought to you in part by Emily Barbara Childmoon, the author of “Good Night Little Turtles”. Good Night Little Turtles is a wonderful bedtime fable that features two child turtle characters, Ellie and Sam as they go by their daily routines while learning the lessons of appreciating nature, being good at school, and understanding the love of their parents. Find it on Amazon.
My search for fables and folktales
Growing up, there’s something so magical about reading fables. I had this little brown set of fables for kids where I read stories of mice, cats, dogs, and other animals who experienced human-like situations. There’s just something so interesting when my favorite animals experienced what I felt, and truly those stories stuck in my mind.
Thus, I want to show you one of the best bedtime fables that I have come across recently, called “Good Night Little Turtles”, while explaining what sets fables apart from other types of children’s stories.

Best Bedtime Fables: Why Read Them?
Fables provide an area of interest
There’s something very common about children–they love animals! When I was a child, I was fascinated with having my own pets–I wanted to own a dog, a cat, and even a pet bunny. I am thankful that my parents gave me the experience of having one, and reading stories where animals are the key characters piqued my interest.
In “Good Night Little Turtles”, the main characters of the story are Ellie and Sam. Many children are very interested in pet characters, which allows them to follow along through the story much easier.
Fables give magic and wonder
Have you ever heard of the term “childlike wonder”? In this stress-ridden age, many people desire to go back to that state where everything feels new and exciting. Reading these best bedtime fables to your children can fill you and them with that novel experience of feeling magical.
You and your children can immerse yourself in the wonderful world of each character, such as in “Good Night Little Turtles”. There’s a part of the story where the moon dusted each animal with magic, making them feel relaxed and sleepy for the night ahead.
Fables spark imaginative learning
With the best fables to read aloud such as “Good Night Little Turtles”, the sky’s the limit. This means that children can be creative with their own pretend play or made-up stories.
These stories give children inspiration in their own narratives. When I was a child, I created my own storybooks using recycled papers and staplers. I would exchange these “storybooks” with my cousins and we would read each others’ stories. The bedtime fables I read have always inspired me, and my imagination runs wild on the stories I could create.
Fables often come with a moral lesson
These animal-filled stories aren’t just for fun and creativity–they also come with a moral lesson! “Good Night Little Turtles” comes with lessons on appreciating your parents, the beauty of nature, as well as doing good in school.
As children become inspired by the characters, they also tend to emulate their behaviors at home, in school, or in other settings. These moral lessons build character even at an early age, teaching concepts of love and responsibility.
That’s it! I hope you enjoyed reading this post about the wonder of fables. Don’t forget to check out Emily Barbara Childmoon’s Book, “Good Night Little Turtles” on Amazon.
