In my life, there’s no other role that has shaken and changed me other than being a mom. There are so many untold things about being a mother that you’ll realize once you already have the baby in your arms. It’s a completely new world, and you’ll see everything differently the moment you take on the role of being a parent. Perhaps the changes are so overwhelming to you, and you feel stressed being a mom.

How to deal with exhaustion and stress: My experience
The first few months of motherhood, especially as a first-time mom can be quite stressful because you don’t know yet what to expect. However, with your maternal instincts, you will get a hand on it and figure out which things will work for you.
With motherhood, it can feel like you’re giving and giving, with nothing left for yourself–and this is why many feel stress stay at home mom, working mom, single mom, or part time working mom or any other additional roles they fill. In this post, I will share my experience on how to avoid feeling stressed as a mom, and what you can do to change both your perspective and situation.

Plan your days ahead
What really helped me to maintain calm and productivity in my days as a mom is having a plan ahead. Sometimes, when you don’t write down things, you feel like they’re a lot of put in your head–and the sense of overwhelm kicks in.
What it took for me to collect my thoughts is having a daily planner or journal where I can write down the tasks for the day. Since I am working part time, while managing the household and caring for my toddler, this helps me to unload all my activities for the day and have a point of referral. I’m not just coasting through and hoping for the best–I am ready for a plan. Here are some examples of daily planners that I like which I think will be a great stressed out mom help:

Since I am always having trouble flipping through journals, these planner sheets work really well for me.
Changing your perspective
I don’t know with you, but for some reason one of my sources of stress is seeing clutter. Initially, I feel stressed being a mom when I see mess that I can’t get to right away, or if I don’t have energy to clean the clutter at that moment.
Something that really changed my perspective is an idea from a book called “Stretched Too Thin”. It helped me see that even if there’s a current mess, you could think of it as a “house well-lived”. A messy house means there are children playing, and your home is being filled with memories that will last a lifetime. Instead of seeing the clutter and ugly parts, see the joy in your child’s face when he’s playing. You can get back to the mess later because, in the end, family is what matters.

Optimize your systems
I know this sounds really complex, but this suggestions means thinking about what you did in your previous days to make things efficient in your parenting, work, and household management. You can ask questions such as:
- What did I learn from this experience?
- How can I make this task efficient?
- Are there resources that can help me?
- What did I do well and how can I improve?
Constant self-reflection and trying new strategies to make things more efficient and less stressful for you may help in optimizing your systems in all the roles you fill. I do this simply day by day. I think about what went well (or not so well) in my previous day and apply all the changes towards improvement. This is a system of business management that I chose to apply called the Kaizen philosophy. You can learn more about Kaizen here:
First things first
This is one of things we often forget leading to stressed being a mom. I have talked to people who are stressed out homeschool mom because of the many things they have to juggle. As an aspiring homeschool mom myself, I wanted to emphasize the importance of putting first things first.
This means giving your energy and attention to urgent tasks first rather than going through around them and completing menial tasks with little to no impact. For example, the dishes are piling up, but your child needs to finish a homework with your assistance. You feel overwhelmed because you feel like there’s limited time to do both. However, when you look at the big-picture situation, you’ll realize that there’s no sense of urgency in the dishes because no one is evaluating how good you are with dishwashing.
You’ll realize that first things first, your child needs to complete a school requirement so just proceed with that task filled with mindfulness and intentionality. Putting first things first helps with the unnecessary overwhelm and allows you to prioritize your tasks with the most impact.
