How do I make my relationship last longer? My personal experience
My husband and I are in a busy season in our lives. With two young kids, I feel like I am juggling a lot of things. Work, taking care of the kids, doing household chores, having a business on the side, and nourishing my personal and spiritual life, there are a lot of things going on for me. This was also the case before we were married. I was working and was pulled into a lot events in the ministry. During these timelines, he was also busy in a similar way. His demanding career in the Air Force has a lot of responsibilities where he has to be on call at a moment’s notice.
There are a lot of moving gears in both areas of our lives, but I do feel like we keep our relationship thriving because of certain mindsets and things we do. Below, I will be sharing some strategies on how to keep relationship strong when busy.

How to Keep Relationship Strong When Busy: Ideas and Mindsets
Work hard, play hard
What should you do to keep your relationship strong? If you cannot change your busy situation, one of the mindsets to adopt is to “work hard” and “play hard”. What does this mean? Set aside time in your week to recharge through things that will nurture your relationship.
Instead of thinking that your relationship is suffering because both of you are busy, focus on what needs to be done at present, and have undivided attention in a particular time of the day or week to bond. My family and I enjoy spending days out in the weekend, trying new restaurants, and exploring the current place we’re in. In the weekdays, we’re focused on a lot of the things we have to do.
This avoids both him and me to think that our relationship is suffering because of our “busyness”. When you work hard and play hard, you know that there’s a time and place for everything, and both of you are going to be okay.
A daily touch point
Some of you are wondering, “How do I make my relationship last longer?” One of the best ways to do this is through having a daily touch point. What’s something short, yet meaningful thing you can do together on a daily basis that will nourish your relationship?
For Charles and I, it’s the habit of prayer. At the end of the day, we pray and thank God for the day, then pray about the things we have to do tomorrow.
Have a daily touch point you can do together. Here are some ideas:
- Read a page of a book together
- Have your morning coffee together
- Eat lunch together
- Do one chore where you’re in the same area together
- Enjoy sunrise/sunset together
These small, daily meaningful touch points can help you see that your relationship is not failing, even with a busy schedule.
Ask important questions
If a lingering issue is bothering you, it can be great to set aside time to ask important questions. Having this time to openly communicate allows you to be on the same page.
Do this at a time of the day when you’re not occupied, such as before going to sleep or following an afternoon of unwinding from work.
Take action by doing your part
When issues are discussed, both of you should do your part to straighten up things. There’s no relationship without problems — it’s all about the constant action of solving issues, constant refinement, and growth process that makes you and your partner stronger.
When discussing, it’s very helpful not to think that one of you must be right, but rather, focus on what needs to be done to make things right.
Doing your part, and being accountable to each other about things you need to do will help in avoiding resentment.
