Indoor Family Activities Ideas: 5 Things to Do

Categories game with a twist

This is one of my personal favorites. I got this idea from our church retreat held this year. The mechanics are the same as the usual categories game. The twist is only one specific letter is allowed for every category. For example, anything that you would find inside a fridge that starts with letter A.

Players who can’t answer within 5 seconds will be eliminated. It gets funnier as soon as players run out of ideas and force their answers to fit in the category assigned.

DIY Film Festival

It could be a one-day event or done three times in a row, whatever suits the whole family’s schedule. You can go all out with it by preparing printable admission tickets. Make it more attractive with themes and matching costumes. Use a movie projector and a red carpet if you have one. Another idea is an indoor drive-in theatre if you have a backyard at home.

It could also be as simple as planning movies to watch on TV and snacks for the family. Make sure to plan and have a wide selection of movies prepared. You can add an activity after the movie to reinforce any lessons learned from it. A simple question and answer, or a short family discussion that will get them to practice critical thinking will also do.

This is also applicable to indoor family activities with toddlers. A compilation of short films is helpful for problems with a short attention span.

Rearranging your house

Indoor family activities for rainy days? This is it! This is a good way to involve the whole family in chores and train your children to help out around the house.

This is a good way to bond and pour out that energy unused during the quarantine. This is also an opportunity to teach your children how to become organized and use their muscles to carry things around. Since kids have more free time now, this is also the right time to get help in decluttering the home. You can donate the extra clutter or make a few extra cash from it.

Cooking activities

Cooking never fails to make it to the list of fun indoor family activities ideas!

A simple cooking activity like baking chocolate chip cookies can be fun for the whole family. Unleash your creativity by experimenting with a variety of cookie flavors and having a taste test.

Another idea is to prepare a feast and host a family dinner party. Not only your family will enjoy learning new recipes but also practice proper dining etiquette. Having an indoor picnic at your backyard or garden is also great. Ask your children to help out in preparing the snacks.

A cook-off or a bake-off challenge is another option. Make it more fun by taking turns in being the judge.

Indoor obstacle course

This is another great and inexpensive way to engage with your family especially when you have a toddler. Creating an indoor obstacle course will get you and your family moving at the same time. This will practice creativity and resourcefulness in your family.

This is a fun way to exercise your toddler and teach teamwork and cooperation.

This is the time you will be able to cherish more of your time with your family. You see them every day. Your kids have more time now more than ever to spend time with you as well. This allows you to make extra time in bonding with them unlike before this whole pandemic began.

Reflecting on this pandemic and the quarantine that had passed, I think if there is anything to appreciate is the gift of time with your family. Appreciate all big and small moments while your children are young. This pandemic is a reminder to create special moments with your family and that spending time indoors can be as fun and exciting as well.
