When I was young, Science was one of my favorite subjects. I did well in English, but there’s something about Science that captivated me–perhaps it was the way the subject invites curiosity, or how much I marveled at the natural world, I loved Science a lot. Now that I am a mom, I would like to spark that interest in Science in my child. Perhaps you have come across this post because you are also a parent, caregiver, or educator wanting to learn how to teach science at home.

How to teach science at home: My personal experience
Teaching science at home isn’t something I mindfully thought about when my baby was young. I believe that science is all around us, like how nature plays out, or how certain electrical appliances work, or how some events lead to others.
Now that my toddler has much more comprehension, I looked into ways on how to teach science and technology in simple ways that are appropriate for him. We go out in nature exploration, we make kitchen experiments, and I also read him books about science. Maybe your child is a little bit older than mine, and you would like a more formal approach.
Not to worry! In this post, I can give you some examples that I know through my Early Childhood Education learnings. Hopefully, these will provide ideas that can help you get started in teaching science at home.

How to teach science at home: Tips that work
Explain in their language
The easiest ways to teach science at home is to simply explain how things work in age-appropriate language. Subjects such as force and motion, natural world and energy can be explained in many ways a three to four year old can understand.
For example, you can explain that the sun’s rays are hot and gives light, and this is the reason why things exposed to the sun can also be hot as well. This is a little introduction to the Laws of Thermodynamics, which you don’t have to explain in jargon, but you can teach how these things apply in everyday life. If your child shows interest, you can introduce the actual concept and jargons, then you can explain further what it means through simple language and demonstrations.
Explaining simply is one way on how to teach science effectively to young children.
Use age-appropriate materials
If you live in a confined space or there are not a lot of opportunities to explore science through the environment, you can also use age-appropriate materials such as books, worksheets, or digital content. Formal materials help in mastery and allow you to cover many topics without much effort.
If you are looking for a science book that covers many topics stated in the Common Core for Kindergarten and Preschool, you may want to check out my Kindergarten Science Workbook: Cause and Effect Kindergarten Topics.
In this workbook, I tackle subjects such as:
- Forces and motion
- Natural science
- Energy
- Other relevant topics
This how to teach science book items are all targeted to understand the cause and effect based on scientific principles. To get your own copy, you can check it out on Amazon.
Do related home experiments
Another fun way on how to teach basic science is by doing some simple experiments. My workbook provides items on which you can base your experiments, or you can also create some experiments of your own.
For younger children, you can do experiments such as:
- Color mixing: Using food coloring and seeing how colors change based on combinations
- Magnifying glass: Using a magnifying glass to observe bugs, plants, and other things in the natural world
- Sink or float: Understanding buoyancy and density
By doing these little experiments, your child will develop a deeper interest in scientific topics and how they are applicable in actual life.
Answer their questions
Last but not the least, be responsive when they ask curious questions about how the world works. My toddler has not gone to this stage yet, but I believe some parents can be quite “tired” of answering these questions especially if they become too repetitive.
But, one effective way on how to teach science to preschoolers and kindergarteners is actually answering their curious questions! Do not shun them with statements such as “because it’s just like that” or make up some stories–they will actually be more interested in learning about the scientific explanation of how things happen.
Here’s to inviting the love for science and curiosity for your children! I hope this gives you more ideas on how to teach science at home.
