How To Protect Children’s Eyes: Small Habits Help Big

My little one watches TV and in the iPad on occasional times of the day, and this is why I was increasingly aware of his exposure to blue light. I won’t say that I am the perfect parent when it comes to exposing my children to screens. However, I realized that as he grows older, there are small habits I can instill to help lessen his exposure to blue light.

In case you may not be aware, blue light has many negative side effects. It can alter your child’s sleeping patterns, plus gradually damage their vision. This is why as parents, we need to find ways on how to protect eyes from screens for our family. In this post, we will be looking at helpful tips to get you started on avoiding too much blue light, as inspired by Pickle-Do.

How To Protect Children’s Eyes: Effective Ways

Use anti-blue light glasses such as Pickle-Do

As early as possible, you can instill the habit of wearing anti-blue light glasses during screen time. When your child is comfortable enough sporting eyewear and can listen to instructions, you can start introducing glasses for screens such as Pickle-Do.

You may be thinking that it’s better to eliminate the blue light from the screen settings. Unfortunately, this may not be an effective way as different programs or gadgets cannot completely block out the blue light. Some screens will emit more light than others, causing damage.

Rather than changing the settings constantly, perhaps it would be convenient to use eyewear that can be easily worn by your child during screen time.

Provide frequent screen breaks

Another way on how to protect eyes from blue light is to set frequent breaks during your children’s screen time. Do not set hour-by-hour times on devices, rather, allow them to have at least 5-10 minute breaks from screens for every 30 minutes. Pickle-Do owner Anthony Sarginson suggests these breaks to refresh the eyes and even the brain.

This gives the eyes ample time to rest from strain and excess blue light. Some signs of eye strain in children include teary, red eyes, blurry vision, or mild pain. When taking breaks, make sure to not do anything related to working with the eyes–you can ask your child to blink, close their eyes, or stare at non-visually stimulating scenes.

Using eye protection glasses indoors and outdoors

Aside from finding ways on how to protect eyes from the computer screen, you can also opt to use Pickle-Do glasses indoors and outdoors for your children. Another harmful type of light is UV rays, which can also cause damage and poor vision.

When combined with the exposure to blue light, it can take an extra toll on the eyes. Thus, you may also encourage your children to use Pickle-Do glasses even outdoors for extra protection. There is also sports-based eyewear for adults to pair with your children’s glasses.

Instill healthy eye hygiene

Last but definitely not least is teaching your child proper eye care. Here are some simple reminders you can start telling your child:

  • Do not rub their eyes, instead ask assistance from you to use saline drops
  • Do not touch their eyes with dirty hands
  • Avoid reading in the dark to lessen eye strain
  • Avoid playing with sharp objects close to the eyes

It will make lasting effects if you also explain what could potentially happen when they do not take these safety precautions. By allowing them to be more aware, the more that they can independently care for their own eyes.

I hope that these tips gave you some ideas on how to protect children’s eyes. You can take it a step further by having Pickle-Do eyewear for your child and for yourself. Don’t forget to visit Pickle-Do by clicking below:
