Signs of a relationship that will last: What to look for

You both have the same core values

I believe that more than that feeling of passion and love, a sign of a relationship that will last are two people who have the same core values. These include your views on faith, parenting, finances, or simply the principles that guide your life decisions.

Think about it as people walking on the same road. If you possess the same core values, you will tread on the same road throughout your whole life. If you don’t, then one of you will end up on a detour.

My husband and I have the same core values in raising children, finances, and most especially our faith. We have a lot of personality differences, but our values is what bond us together and keep us working for the same life goals.

You don’t have to “try” too hard

Sure, in a new relationship everyone is showing their best self. You may make yourself very presentable during your first few dates, rehearse your lines, or give the best gifts, but as time passes by, one of the signs of a relationship that will last is the fact that you don’t have to try so hard.

Are you constantly changing yourself or putting so much effort to get noticed or making yourself a “perfect fit” for your relationship? Maybe it’s time to evaluate this kind of relationship.

People whom you feel at peace with are those who don’t force you to try too hard. You are free to be yourself without unreasonable effort.

You are headed somewhere

Looking for signs a new relationship will last? Something to think about is the progression of your relationship. Do you have plans for settling down or eventually being together (if you are long-distance)? These are signs that your relationship is taking a serious path and is headed somewhere.

When a person is ready to take things with you to the next level, it shows their commitment. Of course in the beginning, you can take things slow, but as years pass by there should be a progression that shows your commitment to each other.

You are at peace

Perhaps one of the signs that have made me realize that my own relationship will last during its earlier stages is how I felt at peace. I have always read in the Bible how God guides us with a “peace that surpasses understanding” and this is the same way I felt about my relationship with Charles.

When I was looking for signs a relationship will last forever, the anchor that kept me going is how it sits in terms of my relationship with God. Knowing that my heart is at peace with my decision helped me make that further commitment that led to our marriage.

I hope these things have provided you insight if you would like to know about signs of a relationship that will last.

  1. My husband and I dated for 4 years long distance (IL and FL) and it really made us communicate well. It has helped us in our marriage for sure. We also share the same core values.
